HOW TO BECOME THE NEXT TOP MODEL
Industry advice from award-winning agency BMA MODELS
Established in 1983, BMA has been discovering and managing the careers of models throughout the UK for more than 40 years. Featuring an impressive portfolio of models across all ages, shapes, demographics and sizes, the international agency has placed its clients on the front cover of magazines, in television commercials, on the runways of renowned fashion shows and in top advertising campaigns. To find out what it takes to make it in the industry, we spoke with BMA Models’ Director – and former model – Lynn Campbell-Walter.
How is a model discovered? What can someone who wishes to become a model start doing right now to call the attention of an agency?
This depends on the specific requirements of the model agency. Some model agencies use scouts whose job is to search for potential models in public spaces, like shopping areas or events such as fashion shows, concerts, and competitions. Scouts will look for individuals who possess the desired physical attributes, unique features, or a distinctive sense of style the model agency requires.
Many modelling agencies accept submissions from aspiring models through their websites or social media platforms. Aspiring models can submit their photos, measurements, and relevant information online for consideration.
Model agencies and clients frequently hold casting calls or open auditions where aspiring models can showcase their talent in front of industry professionals. These events provide an opportunity for models to demonstrate their runway walk, posing ability, and overall presence.
Social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube have become important tools for aspiring models to showcase their portfolio, personality, and unique style. Building a strong professional online presence can attract the attention of model agencies. Overall, if an aspiring model wishes to call the attention of an agency it involves a combination of proactive efforts. Building a strong portfolio, maintaining professionalism, and being persistent are key factors in succeeding in the very competitive world of modelling.
What do you look for in a model? How much does their personality, talent and skills factor as opposed to being purely about their aesthetics?
While aesthetics plays a significant role in the modelling industry, other factors such as personality, talent, and skills also carry considerable weight.
Agencies often seek models with specific height and body proportions that meet industry standards for runway, fashion, commercial, or other types of modelling. Clear skin, healthy hair, and well-maintained teeth are essential for models across various sectors of the industry. Grooming, poise, and presentation play a crucial role in creating a polished and professional appearance. However, as models are expected to exude confidence, charisma, and presence on and off the runway or on photo shoots, so personality is key. Agencies will look for models who demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and a positive attitude in their interactions with clients, photographers, and industry professionals. Models who can adapt to different environments, styles, and creative directions are highly valued. For runway and photographic models, mastering the runway walk and posing for fashion shoots is crucial. For acting abilities, models should be able to convey a range of emotions and expressions convincingly with some basic acting skills to convey messaging effectively.
So, whilst aesthetics may initially attract attention, personality, talent, and skills ultimately determine a model’s success and longevity in the industry. Agencies seek models who not only have the right look but also possess the professionalism, versatility, and charisma to excel in a competitive and a dynamic environment.
With regards to aesthetics, are you noticing any trends in terms of age profile, body types or ethnic backgrounds currently in high demand?
Trends in the aesthetics of models can vary over time and across different segments of the fashion and modelling industries. But overall, the trend towards diversity and inclusivity in age, gender, body type, and ethnic background has been gaining momentum in the modelling industry in recent years.
There has been a growing demand for diversity and inclusivity, for example, age representation within the modelling industry. This trend has led to increased opportunities for models of various age groups, including older models (often referred to as “mature models”) who defy traditional age norms and bring a sense of authenticity and relatability to campaigns and runway shows.
Also there has been a growing emphasis on ethnic and cultural diversity in the modelling industry, reflecting the global nature of fashion and the increasing demand for representation and inclusion. Agencies and brands are actively seeking models from diverse ethnic backgrounds, to better reflect the multicultural world we live in.
The fashion industry has been gradually embracing body diversity and inclusivity, with a shift towards representing a broader range of body types and sizes. This movement has been driven by consumer demand for more realistic and inclusive portrayals of beauty.
To what extent, if at all, does having the right social media following or public profile help to boost the suitability of a model?
A large social media following can increase a model’s visibility and exposure to a wider audience, including potential clients, casting directors, and fans. Models with a significant online presence may attract more attention from industry professionals and have a greater chance of being discovered for opportunities such as campaigns, collaborations, and endorsements.
Social media can cultivate a model’s personal brand, showcasing their unique style, personality, and interests and can provide models with a powerful tool for networking and building connections with other industry professionals, including photographers, designers, stylists, and fellow models. Engaging with peers and collaborators online can lead to valuable opportunities whilst enabling models to engage directly with their fans and followers, fostering a sense of community and loyalty.
However, models still need to possess the requisite talent, professionalism, and dedication to succeed, and having a large social media following does not guarantee bookings or career advancement.
You also have a dedicated wing for hand models. How does this differ from the more traditional modelling assignments?
Hand modelling is primarily focused on showcasing products and used in advertisements and promotional materials directly related to the hands, such as jewellery, watches, nail polish, cosmetics, skincare products, and household items.
In hand modelling, the primary focus is on showcasing the hands and requires a unique set of skills, including the ability to pose the hands in various positions and angles while maintaining a natural and relaxed appearance. It requires meticulous attention to detail, as even minor imperfections or blemishes on the hands can be magnified in close-up photography. Models must take care to maintain their hands in pristine condition, which may involve regular moisturising, nail care, and protection from sun damage.
Overall, hand modelling requires a combination of aesthetic appeal, technical skill, and attention to detail, making it a specialised but potentially rewarding niche within the broader field of modelling. Take a look at our blog for some tips: www.bmahands.com/blog
