An Interview with Amrik Singh, CEO of A1 Clutches

Car repairs are a costly game, and unfortunately clutch problems are a common issue for vehicles with manual transmissions. Often arising from wear and tear or improper driving habits, diagnosing and fixing these issues requires expertise and quality parts to ensure long-lasting performance. Specialising in vehicle clutches and gearboxes, alongside a wide range of other traditional maintenance and repair services, we spoke to Amrik Singh, CEO of Midlands-based A1 Clutches, to find out more.

What are some of the most common clutch issues customers face, and how can you help?

We frequently encounter issues such as clutch slipping, difficulty engaging gears, juddering, and unusual noises. Worn clutch plates, faulty hydraulics, or issues with the release bearing typically cause these problems. With 35 years of hands-on experience across our four state-of-the-art sites, we’ve developed proven processes to accurately diagnose and efficiently fix these problems. We only use OE-quality parts and provide transparent advice to ensure long-lasting repairs.

Can you walk us through your process for diagnosing a clutch issue? What key signs do you look for?

We begin with a road test to replicate the issue the customer is experiencing. Then we check for symptoms such as clutch slippage, noise, pedal resistance, and gear engagement. After that, we conduct a mechanical inspection of components, including the clutch cable, hydraulic system, release bearing, and flywheel. Using this structured and methodical approach allows us to accurately pinpoint the problem and recommend the best solution moving forward.

What are the most crucial components of clutch maintenance?

Regular inspection and fluid checks are key. Keeping the clutch hydraulic fluid clean and at the right level can prevent premature wear. Driving habits also matter – avoiding riding the clutch or holding it down unnecessarily helps prolong clutch life. If you notice any change in the pedal feel or responsiveness, get it checked early. Preventive maintenance can save costly repairs in the long run.

Aside from clutch repair, what other services can you offer?

While we specialise in clutch and gearbox repairs, A1 Clutches also offers full vehicle servicing, diagnostics, brake repairs, flywheel replacements, and general mechanical repairs. We work on all makes and models, including high-performance and commercial vehicles, motor homes, and 4×4 vehicles.

Can you tell us more about your in-house training programme for UK and international students?

Yes, we proudly run an in-house training programme that supports the next generation of vehicle technicians. Delivered across our four modern sites, trainees gain hands-on experience under expert guidance, learning the latest repair techniques and diagnostic procedures. The programme is open to both UK and international students, reflecting our commitment to industry education and skill development.

How do you aid new drivers in understanding the importance of general vehicle maintenance?

We believe that education empowers drivers. For new motorists, our team explains servicing requirements in clear, simple terms. Whether it’s showing them how to check fluids or explaining the importance of regular servicing, we ensure every driver leaves better informed. We also offer a range of printed and digital resources for ongoing learning.

How do you stay up to date with new vehicle technology and repair techniques?

Our technicians undergo regular training and certification updates. We also invest in the latest diagnostic tools and workshop equipment. With the automotive industry constantly evolving – especially with electric and hybrid technologies – staying ahead is part of our commitment to excellence.

What does the future hold for A1 Clutches? Are there any exciting service expansions or partnerships to look out for?

The future is bright. We’re looking to expand our services even further – particularly into electric vehicle diagnostics and advanced transmission repairs. We’re also exploring new training collaborations and partnerships to continue delivering the highest standards across our four sites. With more than three decades of success behind us, we continually move forward.
