REVIEW: THE CLOCK TOWER

Located in one of Sidmouth’s most historical buildings, The Clock Tower offers a dining experience to remember. Since 1991 this timeless café, situated in Connaught Gardens, has been serving brunch, lunch and gorgeous sweet treats, beloved by tourists and locals alike. With exceptional service and breathtaking views, The Clock Tower has earned a reputation as one of Sidmouth’s greatest cafés.

Sidmouth’s historic charm draws visitors from across the country, and The Clock Tower is no different. The 16th century lime kiln-turned-cakery is located at the top of a steep hill, where lime would have been transported by donkey up from the beach. During World War II, the kiln played a crucial role serving as a gunnery defending the south coast. Nowadays, the building’s elevated position provides idyllic views over the famous Jurassic coastline. Having endured the test of time, the tower has been fully restored as a wonderful Grade II listed building, serving some of the tastiest food in Sidmouth.

The family business, which has been running for over 30 years, is dedicated to providing the best service possible. With friendly and welcoming staff ready to accommodate the needs of every guest, each experience is smooth and enjoyable, – whether it be creating space for a large group, or catering to dietary needs.

Every dish is homemade and cooked to order, with a wide selection of brunch and lunchtime favourites. With a menu individually curated by Chef Patron Stewart Fraser, guests can enjoy a hearty plate of full English breakfast, smoked salmon and free-range scrambled eggs on toast, or the special Clock Tower muesli blend. Lunch options range from sensational sandwiches and toasties, to seaside favourites including fish and chips, and scampi.

Where The Clock Tower really excels though, is with their famous cakes and gateaux, which change daily. From classic fruit scones with local clotted cream and homemade jam, to the delicious signature date and caramel cake, there is something for everyone to enjoy. A slice of cake and cup of tea has never tasted so good as when enjoyed in the tranquil gardens, or looking down on the beach below. As a fully licensed café, there is the perfect drink for any occasion including wines, locally sourced spirits, beer and cider.

The environmentally conscious owners at The Clock Tower ensure an eco-friendly operation, where all waste is recycled and reused, with 0% going to landfill. In addition, they source the best, local ingredients in order to cut down on emissions and support local farms and businesses. Coffee served in the café is ground and roasted down the road weekly, while all meat, fish, bread, dairy and produce featured on the menu is sourced from local farms and suppliers. This has the additional benefit of contributing to the freshness of dishes, where each bite is flavourful and delicious.

The Clock Tower is the perfect place to enjoy a meal or a cuppa, with beautiful views across Sidmouth Beach and Connaught Gardens. Open from 10am Wednesday to Sunday, it’s accessible via a short walk from the main town and Sidmouth sea front.
